What is "distilling"? (as it relates to booze)

Ciroc vodka is distilled 5 times? A much cheaper vodka (Smirnoff) states on their label "Distilled 3 times".
Most vodkas on the shelf don't even state how many times they are distilled. Which brings me back to my question.

WTF does it mean and is it a major reason for higher cost?

I am not sure I could explain it in my own words that would make any sense, so here is the best definition I could find on disitlling, as it pertains to alcohol.

"The distillation process is based on the different boiling points of water (212 °F [100 °C]) and alcohol (173 °F [78.5 °C]). The alcohol vapours that arise while the fermented liquid boils are trapped and recondensed to create a liquid of much greater alcoholic strength. The resultant distillate is matured, often for several years, before it is packaged and sold."

Hope this helps. If you have any questions about a particluar vodka, and its process, take a look at their websites for some great information.

Sky--You're a good fella..
I should look more stuff up before spouting off...

I truly believe that -- you get what you pay for so to speak in foods. I just am ignorant about alcohol.. I understand that AGEING makes a certain booze more. But was wondering if ageing is distilling.

My pleasure to help.

Aging and distilling are not the same. Aging usually refers to sitting in barrels (oak) for a period of time, like wine, whiskeys, teqilia's, etc.

I also believe in you get what you pay for.

Great question, and I like where you are coming from with this one.

There are two that are about equal in price and they are the Russian Stolichyana Elit and the French Jean-Marc XO. You can find either bottles for around $60 for the 750ml.

The Elit is very good, but I have yet to try the XO. I may have to look for it, and give it a try for the Holidays.

However, there is a new vodka getting a lot of press, because they are going way high end with the process and bottle. I guess for the idiot with too much money. The vodka is Diaka, and it is filtered through 100 diamonds of about 1 carat in size. The bottle also contains crystal. No price has been set, as of yet.

Great info Sky. I don't know that I'll ever be able to spend that sort of bucks for booze, but I do know that better booze means less hangover (at least from what I see)

Dollar for dollar which vodka do you think gives the best value with a premium being put on lack of hangover? If such a thing exists...:toast:

Another good question. I feel you can't go wrong with any of the "top shelf" vodkas. Vodka isn't a real expensive alcoholic beverage, but the less it is distilled and filtered, the worse the hangover. The impurities make it worse, as well as the mixers. Stick to a good 20-30 bottle and you should be fine. Crioc, Chopin, Belvedere, whatever you like best.

If you drink too much of anything you will feel it the next day. A couple of years ago, a buddy of mine bought me a bottle of Chopin for a house warming gift. I drank 3/4 of the bottle that night, and felt like crap uintil late afternoon the next day.
